The Cause

The beneficiary of the Golf Day and 19th Hole Dinner for 2018 is Makunduchi Hospital, managed by HIPZ and the Ministry of Health. The Rotary Club of Zanzibar is delighted to be using the money raised from this year’s Golf Event to provide modern staff accommodation.

Over a number of years, HIPZ and the Rotary Club have worked together to improve the hospital infrastructure and provide much-needed equipment.  Rotary and HIPZ have a current project to improve service delivery and quality of care at Makunduchi Hospital from funds raised during the 2016 Rotary Zanzibar & Fumba Town Golf Day.

One of the biggest problems an isolated hospital faces is recruiting and retaining skilled clinical technicians and medical staff, as people are drawn to the comforts of urban life. The work is tough and the day starts very early. In order to increase the attractiveness of working at Makunduchi and thereby improving staff retention, the Rotary Club is delighted to be using the money raised from this year’s Golf Day to provide modern staff accommodation. Completion is anticipated by the start of 2019.

This project has the full support of the local community who has already started the building project and is voluntarily providing labour. However, without additional funds from Rotary, the project cannot be completed.

We are happy to announce that the Ministry of Health is completing the staff accommodation at Makunduchi Hospital which allows us to progress further down our list of what we would like to achieve; the extension of the female ward and creation of a dedicated post-miscarriage care unit. However, this goes beyond simply extending and refurbishing the female ward, our aim is to consolidate the services offered to female patients in a way that offers them greater privacy and respect.

The hospital currently deals with about 30 cases of miscarriage a month and needs a dedicated surgical space for safe and private medical care and a dedicated area to offer counselling as part of their comprehensive Post Abortion Care (CPAC). Here we must emphasize the word abortion relates to miscarriage and not an elected choice. Traditionally, miscarriage is treated as a fact of life, when in reality it is hugely traumatic and we are very pleased to support a programme that cares for woman to this extent.

The hospital receives an average of 70 female inpatients a month. The existing ward has 6 beds and they hope to increase this to 10. The complete extension increases the existing ward by approximately 160%.

Our 2018 Beneficiary: Extension of the female ward and creation of a dedicated post-miscarriage care unit at Makunduchi Hospital
